Best of the Beatles
Jun. 30th, 2007 11:14 amHow often does this happen? A coworker won two tickets off the radio to see Pete Best last night (Pete Best, Best of the Beatles, get it?), but couldn't go. He gave 'em to anther coworker, but she wasn't up for it, so BAM! Into my lap they landed... and I went WHEEE!
Sure, he got replaced by Ringo in '62, but how often am I gonna get a (FREE!) chance to see a Beatle???
We got to Dan Electro's with a little time to spare, but parking was already full, with lines of cars parked along the street in all directions. We were going to have to park along a ditch when a homeowner walked over to the car to ask what all the fuss was about. (It's not usually near that crowded.) We told him, and he said we could park in his driveway if we wanted to, he'd be out all night. How lucky was that?
The opening act was Kozmic Pearl, a kick ass Janis Joplin tribute band. They were really great... I don't know how that woman could talk after singing like that!
We used the break between acts to go outside and cool down. That place was SRO and it says something when it's hotter inside than out here in Houston!
Then it was time for the show. I'll admit, I wasn't sure what to expect... maybe some old geezer up on stage pleading "Look at me! I'm still important!" It really could have been sad. But I really was surprised. Sure, he's old, with cottony white hair and the face of a well lived man, but the music was tight, with just as much energy and enthusiasm as any band I've seen. They worked the crowd, hitting all the right notes and keeping that fast pace going despite the buckets of sweat pouring off of everyone. (I swear I must've lost 5 pounds last night, easy.) Another thing they did really well was how they handled the history between each song. Sure it was expected, getting the fact that Best had recorded this song with the Beatles at X time, or played it with them in that city on X date, but instead of Best telling the audience, and risk coming off as all "Please be impressed by me", the guitar players up front did the talking. I liked that. He did come out from behind the drum kit once, to talk to the audience for a bit, joke around, but he really is a drummer so that's where he stayed.
We could have stuck around to get an autograph, but by 1:30am we were dead tired and just wanted to get home. But it really was one hell of a night.
