I was chatting with Ryu about the fifth Harry Potter book when this little bunny came and bit me. Hard.

First off, Ryu and I agree... Snape was a Death Eater. The man was almost killed by a frothing werewolf. But no, that is his worst memory? Don't think so, pal! But, what if Snape pulled Harry out of the pensive before the it had gotten to the really bad part? I may play with this idea later, but for now I think the drabble works.

Snape's Worst Memory, Complete.

Hissing, spitting, roiling anger boiled in his veins. Only now, his tormentors having grown tired of his misery and slowly wandering toward livelier distraction, did Snape test the use of his legs. Bad enough the awkward gangling of middle teens, but that ass's spells had left such simple acts as walking temporarily beyond his reach. Crawling, keeping his eyes away from the shore, away from where Lily and that Potter stood talking, he slowly unwound his wand from the bramble where it had been kicked. Even the simplest retrieval spells caught on the fury in his throat.

Straightening, intent on retreat till the next O.W.L. exam, he was surprised to find he was once again not alone.

"Severus."

"Lucius."

The blond's circle of friends did not extend to the more... scholarly side of Slytherin, and surely the few times he has sold notes to the insufferable snob in no way made them friends, so Snape really had no idea what the other boy wanted. Unless...

"They've managed again, haven't they, Severus? Turned you into their toy before you could fight back."

The lanky boy's jaw clenched tighter.

"I told you they'd do it again... offered to let some of my friends lend you a hand, keep them from ganging up on you... on our House."

Lily had tried so hard not to laugh, but when his trousers started to slide... And what was Malfoy whispering in his ear?

"Everything would have been all right, if you'd only trusted me."

He looked along the shore, could see her talking to that Potter.

"It's for our House, nothing more. I ask for nothing in return."

She was laughing.

Years later, weighing all the horrors he'd done, the innumerable times he'd cast his soul farther from heaven, Severus Snape found he'd become immune to the pain. Past failings were safely locked away behind the thick, numbing gauze of purpose. But the first time...

"Do you trust me, Severus?"

"...yes."

The first time always hurt.

Ah.

Very, very good. It wasn't the betrayal so much as the trust given in vain.

*nod* Exactly. And like I said to Ryu last night, it's the opening of Pandora's Box. Everything after may be horrible, but the worst is knowing you opened the box in the first place.

Well done, bunny! Oh...and you, too, Blue. I jsut *had* to wonder about that given the chapter title, and the fact that he was a Deatheater (and nearly chomped on my a werewolf)...it *has* to be something like this...or a lead up to The Incident. Something!

But I like this version >:^} I enjoy Evil Manipulative Malfoy/Snape. Short but to the point, got your idea across. *clappage* I like it!

*beam* Thank you! I'm sure there'll be a ton of other takes on the chapter, between now and the next book, but for now I think this works.
