What if, rather than what Harry sees in the Pensive, Snape's worst memory becomes walking in on Harry viewing his most private past?

I still can't believe that scene after the O.W.L.s was it...

Actually, I was gonna post about this, since there seems to be such a furor over, "He must have worse memories than that!" Which... yeah. Death Eater. Near death experiences. Urg.

But the books are all from Harry's POV, so maybe the chapter titles are, too? That is, what Harry saw isn't necessarily Snape's worst memory, but when Harry saw him pulling them out to put in the Pensieve Harry assumed it must be his worst memory because if Harry had the option, that's what he would do. When really, it was just the memory that Snape least wanted him to see.

And I can believe that. Snape is pretty damned unwilling to humor or "protect" Harry, so I imagine if Harry had stumbled onto a memory of torture or death, Snape would consider it... instructive. But he sure as hell wouldn't want Harry to witness his humiliation at the hands of his father and godfather.

(And there's fic-fodder there, too... because what if it wasn't that Snape didn't want Harry to see him humiliated? What if he was trying to hide James' horrid behavior? *grin*)

Oooh, have you finished the book, then? And like the rest of the books, there's enough holes to drive a mack truck worth of fics through! ^_~

(And Mmm, I like the idea of it being just one more way Snape had tried to shield Harry. Esp. as it seems no one bothered to ever shield him as a child.)

You know, some people are just seriously pissed off that ALL the answers weren't in this book. It made me think of you, and your comment that this was the first book in the series that ACTED like a book in a *series*...in that it's a bridge, not a story whole and complete in itself.

Which prob doesn't have anything to do with your post, but I felt like mentioning it. SO there.

SO there.

Oh yeah? Well.. well... Fine!

(And, FWIW, I'm perfectly happy with all the unanswered bits. Now, if this had been a one-shot, or the end of the series, that'd be different.)
