I was driving home the other day and saw a man selling roses by the stop light. Bundles of red petals and cellophane were gathered under his arm, and the color called to me. It was a deep red, not that dismissive pink, reminiscent of bubble gum and toenail polish, not that tangy, washed out yellow that's only special to Texans. It was a red red.
Unfortunately, I was also broke.
The man saw me eyeing his flowers, then came over and told me they were in bundles, $5 or $10 each. I had $2. The nice man (obviously wanting to unload his flowers before they died) undid a little bundle and let me have 2 roses for my last 2 bucks.
Now I have two bright, colorful dabs of color by my computer, reminding me that there is more to life than Gateway tans and grays.
I think I got the better deal.
