And now for a special news bulletin
Oct. 22nd, 2003 05:38 amYaoiCon 2003
This is mostly just my transcribed notes from during the con in all it's disjointed, cursing glory, meaning it's full of details for the first few days (when I was lucid) and then sharply peters off at the end (when having the capacity to think "Ooo, fire pretty!" meant I was doing pretty darn good.)
Hedonism ahoy!
Day 1: There is no land!
...I probably should have written this before that last rum & coke, 'cause there's no way I'm gonna remember everything.
Arrived friday no problem, amazing concidering the f'ing SF airport damn near gave me a heart attack. The plane slows down, nothing but water out either window. Then we get really low, still nothing to see outside but water. The engines are causing massive ripples and waves in the water, but there's no LAND! I'm thinking NoLand!ohmygodWe'regoingtocrash!NOLAND!We'regoingtocrashTHEREISNOLAND! (Of course I didn't say anything out loud, people'd think I was William Shatner from that Twilight Zone episode. "There's SOMEthing... ON... the WING!")
Mako picked me up at the airport, 'cause she's wonderful, and drove me to the hotel, where I met her mom, the very talented Zamber, and my room mates Helm (such a large talent, such a tiny person) and her boyfriend Alex. (Both Zamber and Helm have their own sites, but as I can't find my bookmarks, check out what they have up on Minkland under fanart.) People started trickling in and out of the room, including Mink, Jink, PLNunn, Tsubaski...
The delicious GioGio showed up around 7, where upon we walked to Union Square to hit Victoria's Secret (Mmmm, wings!) before going to dinner at an Irish pub. I had lambchops and a Snakebite and Black. (Mmmm, booze!)
Went back to the hotel room to swap music and porn, then Gio and Mako's mom got into this huge Rugby discussion. (All I want's another calendar of nekkid Rugby players. Is that asking for much? ^_~ ) Over the course of the night, I think I ran into the Dred Pirate Katsu, Kitsune, Ravynfyre, T-Kitty (who gives the BEST hugs,) Totally Rockin, Nova, TPod, Tammy Lee (and her accountant), Marla, Alexis, Olga, Fablespinner, and a hell of a lot of others who fuck if I remember just now. (Yes, I did get on my knees for Katsu and Gio, but they're special and helped me back up when I got stuck down there.)
After the party and seeing Gio off, I wandered across the hall to Mink's room for more chatting. (Beware the Cheese-It's, they're spiked.) Saw lots of yummy DJ's, talked and laughed for a good, long time, and now I'm gonna pas out. Good night.
Day 2: Happy pants are wet pants.
Who sleeps at a con? Aparently, not fucking me. Staggered to bed around 3 (miraculously without waking anyone when I walked right into the (closed) door connecting Mako's and my rooms. Then BOOM, I'm wide awake at 5:30. Color me not happy. (Ok, maybe "wide awake" is a bit of a stretch. Took a good ten minutes to figure out how to run the shower.) Luckly the video room has 24hr programing, so there was somewhere I could go and not risk waking anyone else up. Got to watch some Kizuna (god, the Cheese,) and the first half hour of so of the X movie. (She may be a deaf, dumb, and blind girl, but she sure plays a mean pinball.) Then TR showed and we went off in search of caffiene.
After pressing the talented TR for more Kento, ('cause, ya know, the world needs more Kento-luv,) and talking some about an old Cowboy Bebop fic I wrote, (I'm always amazed when anyone remembers anything I wrote... it was so long ago!) I headed back and got to help Zamber lug her art down to the dealer's room. I'm a good helper, really I am. (Really good at standing there watching.) Wandering the potential swag for a bit, I then hooked up with Katsu in the art room where we pawed through the DJ's we'd both procured, leading to Katsu giving me the most perfect tag line. "Happy pants are wet pants." (Hee! I found a great "everybody wants Snape" DJ that's got me in stiches!)
Found out T-kitty's gonna be doing a yaoi skit later, Cane/Shido from Nightwalker! Hope I don't miss it!
As I've been up for 7 hours, maybe I should have breakfast? Found a little hole in the wall Indian resturant across the street from the hotel. Yay for tandoori chicken!
Day 2, part 2
Damn, I missed it! Nova, I want those Cane/Shido pics!
Went by the AMV contest, saw some really tight work. (Saw some things that left me scratching my head... Was one vid, an obvious Spike/Julia, that left the audience pretty quiet afterwards... What was it doing at a yaoi con? So, being the smart ass I am, I blurted out with "Oh... so that's het!" But really, the good outweighed the bad.) There was this lovely Weiss one to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", as well as a YnM to Enigma's Gravity of Love that really worked for me. TR kicked ASS with her Saiyuki goodness, and the YMCA one had me rolling. Too bad the vid order was messed up from what they were listed as on the voting ballet. Made it very hard to keep track which one was which. (Especially as easily 2/3 of the vids were Weiss or YnM >.<;;) Maybe if the song was listed, instead of just the fandom and title, it'd be easier to remember which's which?
Hung about the art room (again) with Dred Pirate Katsu, Kitsune, et all before heading out with the Minkland group for dinner at the Fisherman's Warf, Pier 39, for over priced Crab. The Crab House had all these "artsy" painted crabs nailed to the walls... Kind'a freaky, actually. Sat next to Marla, who happens to also be from Houston. (I remember trying to describe the Alamo Drafthouse to her, but for the life of me I couldn't remember that it was on Hwy 6. I was convinced it was on Beltway 8 instead, and probably came off as a complete ditz.) The girls all took pictures on the deck outside the resturant after dinner... For some reason they got a lot of stares from the people sitting at window tables in the resturant. You'd think they never saw anyone reenact a panty shot before.
Stayed up late with Mako and her mom, talking, while Zamber collored. Now, bed.
Day 3: We take plastic
(My note-taking ability takes a massive nose-dive today.)
Wow, real sleep! I never sleep at a con... even managed a real breakfast for a change. Was once again sucked into the dealer's room, commissioned a picture of Gren from Cowboy Bebop, and heard the three most feared words in an environment like that. "We take plastic." (But EEEE! An autographed Firefly picture of Nathan Fillian as Capt'n Space Pants!)
Caught the Yaoi Family Feud (with the $1,000 bish from the auction the night before acting as the buzzer. First one to grab his ass = first one to buzz in!) and then it was lunch time. Had Udon and Sushi (which had to be some of the best I've ever had!)
Saw someone cosplaying Debbie from Queer as Folk, but didn't realize that was who she was dressed as till it was too late. *pout* There was a really good Draco wandering around, too.
Hooked up with GioGio again, and was promptly swept away by the Minkland people to the same Japanese restaurant I went to for lunch, for dinner. Had soft shell crab. Then we all tromped off to a 50's type diner for desert.
Insert lots of talking here, then I walked GioGio down to the BART, then more talking with Mink, Mako, Tammy Lee and Marla. Car Turrets! Bush! Spew! (Trust me, you had to be there. Mink and Mako both lost it at one time or another, and drinks went flying! Tammy Lee knows how to tell a story!)
Day 4: Flop, thud, ugh
Groggy, blurry eyed, can't think, can't focus... Yep. it's time to go home.
I honestly didn't think it was possible, but hell if SF streets and drivers aren't worse than Dallas. Watched the passing hills with their houses perched half way up ('cause it's easier to watch that than the little buss zip around traffic like it's the f'ing bus from Harry Potter.) They x-rayed my shoes again, but didn't have any trouble on the trip home... and now it's sleepy time. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
