So. Am I dead yet?
Mar. 20th, 2004 03:31 pmLast night's game was full of eeek! At least for me...
Didn't get out of work till late, not that it matters. They hadn't started playing yet anyway.
Right now in the story, our group is desperately trying to gather 5 swords and 5 pendants that are keys to avoiding the apocalypse (yeah, crappy summary, but it's been 6 months and I don't want to go into everything just now) We've got 4 of the pendants and 1 of the swords, and have discovered a rich socialite (who we suspect is a vampire, but we're paranoid) offers one of the swords we need to anyone who can make it through his gauntlet. (We later found that one of his slaves also has the missing pendant.) It's been offered for a loooong time, and so far no survivors. Our resident rogue made a deal with the guy last week to go through it if he throws the pendent in the pot as well... and then the player doesn't show up!
The gauntlet was designed to give him a run for his money, someone with years of playing experience under his belt (not to mention his character has double the hit points mine does!) and now everyone's looking at ME to go through that thing! The guys running the gauntlet take all her magic items, tell her there's a time limit per room, and lead her to the first door. I tell the guys they'd better resurrect her ass and go in.
The first room wasn't much of a problem, just had to avoid the spikes when the floor spun out from under her. Let's hear it for Evasion. The second, a water trap, wasn't so bad, 'cause she filled her water skin with air before diving down.
The third had zombies and scorpions. And a cage that fell from the ceiling, trapping her while the beasties advanced. Luckily she was able to tip the cage with her crowbar so it fell on the scorpions and jump past the last trap and get out of the room. The fourth room... well, she's never done well against lightning bolts, and the fifth had a leg shredder she was able to avoid.
The sixth room stumped me. A door at the end of the hall had a word puzzle for a key, each letter was a block that could be pushed into the door, but if you pushed the wrong one you got zapped. While looking at this, two blades spring out of the walls and start advancing down the hall toward the door. She was able to jab her crowbar into the chains running one of the blades, leaving enough room on one side of the hall to not get sliced, but I couldn't figure out the puzzle! Lost a major amount of health getting zapped, but man, I was stumped. Either the DM got bored, or rolled divine intervention (either way I'm not complaining) but suddenly her hand started glowing in the shape of a phoenix (her personal totem) and she got the feeling of motherly concern. Running her hand flat over the door like an Ouija board, she was able to push the right letter in to open it.
The seventh room was an oven, and more health was lost while fiddling with that stupid door too.... to the point that she now has only 1 HP left.
The Eighth room had three slits for every five foot surface. Basically, three blades could come out of every tile, to the sides, on the floor, or the ceiling. If even one hits, that's 8d6 of damage... so if even one hits, she's chunky bits. Taking a deep breath, she bolts down the room, setting off every square she steps on. However! She's a ninja with a base reflex of +14, not a single one of 'em hit... But now she's kind'a trapped.
Three blades are spinning horizontal to the ground in the space directly in front of the door, and she's flat on her back on the space next to the door, with a blade spinning vertically out the ceiling above her. She's gotten the door open, but there isn't enough room to get by the blades! And the next room, the ninth room, is the last one in the gauntlet!
And that's when the DM called it, 'cause he was falling asleep in his chair!
ARG!
You can bet I'll be there tonight, just to see how long that one HP lasts.
