What the fuck was that?
Jul. 21st, 2002 05:10 pmI showed up at Starbucks a bit early (traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it would be) and got to watch the little rent boys stand around waiting for their beepers to go off. After a while, I began to imagine what'd happen if M. didn't show. How long would I wait, maybe toss my cup in the trash on the way out with an "attitude" 'cause, you know, by then people would've figured out I'd been stood up. But I wasn't, and M. did show... this tiny thing, barely comes to my shoulder, maybe 1/3 my weight. There I was at one end of the table, Italian hands gesturing with every other word, while M. sat opposite me, so still, hands folded over a newspaper.
We shook hands, and the interview began.
M: So, have you been to the community center?
Blue: Not yet, I rarely get to this side of town...
M: No one ever goes. They're closing it down.
Blue: ...oh.
M: How about Chances?
Blue: No... clubbing isn't really my thing.
M: What about Cross Roads?
Blue: Haven't had a chance yet.
M: They're closing it down.
Blue: ...oh.
M: So, did you come down for the parade?
Blue: Didn't get the chance, had my son in from Austin that weekend.
M: ...oh. What about the festival?
Blue: Couldn't, finals. I've just graduated, graphic design.
M: Must be interesting, all that work on the computer...
Blue: Oh yeah, I've always got the computer going, either working on a project or chatting with friends...
M: I work in IT, but when I'm at home I never have the computer on.... I maybe check email once a week.
Blue: ...oh.
We later hit a bookstore, and we laughed a couple times, but damn...
Maybe things'll go better next weekend. We're supposed to see a movie.
