'Bout a week and a half ago I ordered a Wacom tablet from Gateway, along with some extra memory for Bob. (Gotta love credit sometimes... and yes, my computer's name is Bob. It's a good name.) Yesterday, the memory showed up via UPS, no problems, but no sign of the tablet.

So I call Gateway.

"Oh, that was shipped Fed Ex, and signed for on the 17th."

As I obviously didn't have the package, and no one else lives here, I first ran to the apartment office to see if it was there and I just missed the little slip in my mailbox. No package.

Back on the phone with Gateway. A new person... "They say it was left on the patio."

Patio? My door don't have a... My eyes moved over to the blinds covering my little square hunk of jungle. I guess you could call it a patio, a little bit of cement that I haven't been out on in the four years since I moved here... completely overgrown with wild vines, surrounded by a fence. A fence with no gate. They wouldn't chuck it over the fence would they?

I told her to hold on and peeked out the blinds... and saw the box. One corner crumpled where it had hit the glass before falling onto the vines, completely soaked cardboard, and a nice, big Gateway sticker on the top. It had been out there a week.

She told me to not even bother opening it, just get Fed Ex to return it and I'd get credited for the tablet. (Took me a while just to tear down enough vines to open the door all the way, let alone get close enough to snag the box.)

And then I called Fed Ex.

"Ok, we'll come pick it up and return it. Do you have a number to charge it to?"

.....charge?

No way in hell am I spending my money to get the box back to Gateway, and I didn't have a number to give Fed Ex... so I called Gateway again and got my third person today.

She seemed on the ball. Told me I could either just wait for Fed Ex to reimburse them for the damaged box, which'd take about 6 weeks, or send the box back to Gateway myself for a quicker credit, but I'd have to pay shipping.

I'll wait the extra week or two. And maybe make a Fed Ex voodoo doll while I wait.

I'm burning mad, but I can't say I'm really surprised. Back when I worked for Sears, we were always dealing with shippers losing packages, leaving them in fields or by the side of the road...

*still working on that voodoo doll*

Oooh girlllll...I'd have been soooo entirely pissed off, too. FedEx just TOSSED it over the fence on to your back porch? Good lord, it's so hard to find good help these days. :o/

How dare they treat your stuff that way. I think Fed Ex and UPS and all mail carrioers should start a program where if their employees break it(or mistreat it) it comes out of THEIR paychecks. Then they'll probably start treating packages as carefully as they should

Ouch! My sympathies, Blue. I'd have thought they'd hire people smart enough *not* to chuck boxes over the fence like that, but I guess not. Sounds like that delivery person was bone lazy. :-(
