There hasn't been a whole lot to post about lately, guess I've been in a rut. ...which reminds me. I was talking to a coworker earlier this week, and the phrase "Fair to Midland" came up. I think it's a Southern thing? "How ya doin'?" "Oh, fair to midland..." and I asked if he knew where it had come from. His theory is it's from walking behind covered wagons. If you walked on the side where the wheels turned, you had to deal with churned up mud and stuff, but if you walked in the middle it was easier. (That was his theory, anyway.) After thinking about it, I pointed out that the horse would be in the middle too... so you're either in a rut, or dealing with a ton of sh*t. (Eh, guess you had to be there... and I won't go into my coworkers and I standing around talking, and suddenly quoting the lyrics to I Need A Hero to one another. It's been a strange week.)

Speaking of work, they asked me to write something for the company newsletter about Anime. (They were desperate for filler and I made the mistake of talking about it with the guy in charge of finding article writers... Oops.) When I sat down to write, I kept thinking of all the anime I love and why, all the fun conventions and what I've done at them... and realized I couldn't write about any of it! Somehow I don't think a story about getting girls who dress up as guys to grope each other on film in the middle of the car park would go over very well with upper management. And if it would, I SO don't want to think about it. Still, I think the little bit I put together will work.

In other news, the ex took the boy today to see that South Park puppet movie. Apparently there was a lot of... puppet sex. I guess those Angel and Spike puppets won't be breaking new ground after all. ^_~

Heh... I work in an interesting place. Just like I live an interesting life. It's a curse, but at least it's not boring. ^_~

Your confusion arises from the fact that you're not hearing the phrase properly. The phrase isn't "fair to midland" it's "fair to middling." Middling is a British and American term that has fallen largely into disuse, meaning something of medium high quality. In America, it was used largely in the 1800s to denote an intermediate grade of goods at market. Not the best, but better than average. Since much of "Southern" comes out of lower middle class British and Middle English pronunciations, it's not a surprise that a somewhat archaic term like "Middling" still exists in local phrases in the Southern US. The phrase means you're doing, "average to pretty good, but not fantasmagorical."

Of course, it's generally spelled "middlin'" when used in dialogue, since that's how it's pronounced.

*dances off*

Eh, it happens... Since it was from the South Park people, it should'a been expected.
