Weekend highlight
Oct. 3rd, 2005 12:35 pmSaturday CZ had a gig out in Baytown, some little bar called City Lites.
Even with a major chunk of the freeway shut down for reasons unknown to civilized society, we managed to get out there with a good half hour to spare. Keep in mind Baytown's a good way out from Houston. (Which is a very good thing, as it takes about that long for him to set up his drum kit.) However, the guitar and bass players weren't there, and seeing as one was supposed give the other a ride, this was a bit unsettling. 45 minutes later, they still weren't there... We get a call from the guitar player, saying he's still turned around from all the freeway detours, but should be there in 15... and then the bass player calls, asking when he's gonna be picked up! A half hour after they were supposed to start playing! Everybody was freaking out, trying to figure a way to get a replacement bass player, trying to get the music started as quickly as they could. Needless to say, when the guitar player showed up, Charles wanted to strangle his scrawny little neck. When the other SOB walked in right behind him, I wasn't sure if he'd get kissed or kicked. Everyone fell for it!
The first set was kind'a rough, more of a warm-up really... by the second they'd tightened up alright. It was the third that really had an impact though. Around midnight a couple bikers started filtering in, all leather and tattoos, patches for B.A.C.A - Bikers Against Child Abuse - everywhere (yes, for a while I just thought the word was misspelled)... and I noticed they'd walk up to the main speakers and just stand there, holding their cell phones up. Every time that happened, a few minutes later, even more bikers would show. By 1am the place was packed, bikers pulling their women out between the tables to dance, screaming out songs they wanted to hear. (Lots of Ted Nugent and AC/DC.) The boys were supposed to only play till 1, but with a crowd like that you give 'em what they want... as it was, CZ didn't even start breaking down his kit till 2am!
We got home around 3:30, managed a little something to eat, and pretty much collapsed. Yesterday we were still in a vegetative state and I don't think I really woke up from it all till today.
